Getting Offline with Your Marketing
27 Jul 2025, 08:16
Remember when having a decent website was the height of innovation for small business owners? Rewind about 15 years, and that was the big shift. Everyone was racing to upgrade from their sad little one-pager to a real-deal, proper website. Something functional. Something serious. Something that said, “Yes, I am a legitimate business now, thank you very much.”
Fast forward a decade, and most businesses were already onto their 4th or 5th website revamp. Social media portfolios were filling out – Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, a sprinkle of YouTube if you were feeling ambitious. Some businesses went all-in, others dipped a toe in the water because they felt like they “should be there.” And to be fair, the effort paid off. Back then, a decent online presence gave you an edge.
But now?
Now it’s just the starting point. The baseline. Having a good website and active socials isn’t optional anymore – it’s the price of entry.
And if you’re anything like me (aka: low boredom threshold and a craving for marketing that actually feels interesting), then yeah… online marketing is starting to feel a bit meh.
So, what’s next?
IRL is the New Black
Here’s my gut feeling (and I trust my marketing gut more than any algorithm): we’re seeing a swing back to basics. A return to real life. People want to connect in person. They want to feel something, not just scroll past it. They want a human, not a hashtag.
This doesn’t mean ditching your website and ghosting your socials. It means recognising that those things are now your foundation. The real magic happens on top of that.
We're flipping the script.
Online Supports Offline – Not the Other Way Around
Imagine this:
-
Instead of promoting a business expo or community market on your social media, you’re at the event – chatting to people, handing out freebies, running a good old-fashioned competition with a clipboard and a pen. Your online stuff simply backs that up: shares the photos, tells the story, keeps the conversation going.
-
You’re not just posting about your values – you’re living them. Sponsoring a local event, volunteering, running workshops, collaborating with other businesses. Showing up in your community because that’s where your customers live, work and scroll.
-
You’re creating moments, not just marketing.
So... What's Your Offline Strategy?
This is your nudge. Your challenge. Your “hmm maybe we should try something different” moment.
How do you market your business without relying on a whizzy new app or yet another online ad? What would it look like to truly show up?
Can you:
-
Host a pop-up or open day?
-
Run a live Q&A or mini training for your customers in person?
-
Create a branded experience people will actually talk about?
-
Do something fun, real, surprising or generous that people can’t help but share?
